The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a passenger at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport who allegedly ingested 82 wraps of cocaine with the intention of flying to Milan, according to officials.
NDLEA Commander at the airport, Ahmed Tijani, confirmed the arrest, stating, “Our operatives detected unusual behavior during routine screening. Upon further examination, the passenger was found to have swallowed multiple wraps of cocaine intended for international trafficking.”
He added, “The suspect ingested 82 wraps of the substance, posing serious health risks. Immediate medical intervention was provided, and the individual is now under agency custody pending further investigation.”
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi said the arrest underscores the agency’s continued vigilance against drug trafficking at Nigerian airports. “This case highlights our proactive approach to intercept narcotics before they leave the country. We remain committed to ensuring that drug traffickers are stopped at all points of departure,” Babafemi said.
The agency noted that the passenger, whose identity has not been disclosed, was attempting to board a flight to Milan when the intervention occurred. Investigators are examining the suspect’s network to determine if the operation involves an organized trafficking syndicate.
NDLEA also urged travelers and the public to report suspicious activities related to drug smuggling, emphasizing the health dangers of ingesting narcotics and the severe legal consequences under Nigerian law.
Officials confirmed that the seized cocaine, weighing several kilograms collectively, has been lodged with the agency’s evidence unit for further forensic analysis, while the suspect faces prosecution under the National Drug Law Enforcement Act.
This arrest is part of ongoing efforts by the NDLEA to strengthen airport security and curb the smuggling of illicit drugs from Nigeria to international destinations.
