Nigeria and Britain are partnering to battle disinformation and misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammad and British High Commissioner Peter Vowles spoke on this yesterday during a meeting at the minister’s office in Abuja.
The minister made this known yesterday in a post on his verified X hand.
He said they discussed growing spread of fake news and misinformation, particularly as the country is approaching another election cycle.
According to him, the increasing circulation of misleading information poses challenges to public understanding and could undermine confidence in the electoral process if not properly addressed.
The minister stressed the need for stronger partnerships with countries such as the United Kingdom to promote accurate information, responsible communication and public awareness.
He noted that tackling misinformation should not be left to one institution or country alone, given the growing influence of digital platforms and the speed at which unverified information spreads.
The discussions also focused on strengthening UK-Nigeria relations through improved public communication and identifying practical areas where both countries could work together to address emerging information-related challenges.
Idris said cooperation with international partners would remain important in promoting responsible information management and ensuring that citizens have access to credible information.
He added that Nigeria would continue to work with the United Kingdom and other partners to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and encourage a more responsible information environment.
Vowles, who assumed office about eight weeks ago, said both countries could benefit from closer cooperation in addressing shared information challenges.
He identified misinformation and the misuse of artificial intelligence as areas where Nigeria and the UK could develop common approaches.
