The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest and detention of a corporal following a viral video depicting the physical assault of a junior colleague within a military formation. The incident, which reportedly occurred earlier this week, surfaced on social media platforms on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, drawing widespread condemnation from the public and human rights advocates. Preliminary investigations suggest the altercation was triggered by a personal dispute, with allegations that the senior soldier attacked his subordinate for “talking to his girlfriend.”
In the footage, which lasted approximately two minutes, the corporal is seen repeatedly striking the junior soldier while several other personnel looked on. Following the public outcry, the Army Headquarters ordered an immediate probe into the conduct of the soldiers involved. Army spokesperson, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, stated that the military does not condone any form of indiscipline or “jungle justice” within its ranks, regardless of the provocation. “The Nigerian Army is a professional force governed by a strict Code of Conduct and the Armed Forces Act. There is no room for personal vendettas or the dehumanization of any personnel,” Nwachukwu noted during a press briefing in Abuja.
The corporal is currently being held at a military detention facility pending the conclusion of a Board of Inquiry. Military sources indicate that if found guilty of conduct unbecoming of an officer and physical assault, the suspect could face a reduction in rank or dismissal from service. The victim has reportedly been referred to a military medical facility for evaluation, while the Army leadership has reassured the public that the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings will be made transparent.
