Nigerian Business Leaders Eye Caribbean Markets as GUBA Awards Makes Historic Barbados Debut

Nigerian entrepreneurs and investors are leading the charge toward a new era of Africa-Caribbean commerce as the GUBA Awards prepares to host its inaugural Caribbean edition in Barbados this November, with Nigerian business leaders comprising the overwhelming majority of early registrations.

The three-day summit, scheduled for November 10-12, 2025, represents the 16th edition of the prestigious GUBA Awards and signals a pivotal moment for economic collaboration between Africa’s largest economy and the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Held in partnership with the Office of the Prime Minister of Barbados, the event aims to establish tangible trade relationships within a corridor valued in the billions.

Operating under the theme “Reclaiming Our Atlantic Destiny: Build. Connect. Renew.”, the summit will convene heads of state, corporate executives, investors, and policymakers. High-profile Nigerian attendees expected include Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa, and prominent businessman Femi Otedola.

“Nigerian businesses have conquered African markets and established themselves globally, but the Caribbean represents an underutilised gateway—44 million people with strong purchasing power, cultural affinity, and a business environment that speaks English and understands our entrepreneurial drive,” said Lady Dentaa Amoateng, President and Founder of GUBA.

    Breaking Down Barriers

Addressing connectivity obstacles, GUBA has chartered a direct flight from Accra to Barbados, allowing Lagos-based entrepreneurs to bypass traditional routing through Europe or North America. The charter service has already reached 70% capacity, with Nigerian executives securing the majority of seats.

The timing proves strategic as Nigeria pursues economic diversification beyond oil while Caribbean nations seek alternatives to traditional trading partners. Both regions identify complementary opportunities across fintech, entertainment, agriculture, fashion, renewable energy, and professional services.

The centerpiece two-day Trade and Investment Forum will facilitate partnerships across critical sectors. Nigerian fintech expertise addresses Caribbean banking gaps, Nollywood and Afrobeats find synergies with Caribbean entertainment networks, and Nigerian manufacturers view the region as a springboard to Latin American markets.

    What Participants Gain

Nigerian business leaders will access pre-arranged matchmaking sessions, regulatory briefings, formal spaces for MOU signings, and an exclusive Diplomatic Reception at Ilaro Court, the Prime Minister’s residence, for direct networking with Caribbean ministers and trade commissioners.

GUBA Awards has consistently honored Nigerian excellence, with past recipients including Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation. This year’s Cultural Showcase will feature a Hollywood premiere starring celebrated Nigerian actress Sola Sobowale.

With charter flight capacity nearly filled and event registration being capped, Nigerian business leaders are advised to secure spots immediately. Registration includes access to all forum sessions, the Cultural Showcase, Awards Ceremony, and Diplomatic Reception.

For Nigerian registrations and charter flight bookings, contact Stephanie Busari at Stephanie@sbbmedia.com or visit www.gubaawards.com/travel.

“The question Nigerian CEOs should ask isn’t ‘Why Barbados?’ but rather ‘Why haven’t we done this sooner?’” Lady Dentaa Amoateng emphasized. “Nigerian businesses need to be where those conversations are happening, where those deals are being structured. That place, this November, is Barbados.”

About GUBA: GUBA (Grow, Unite, Build Africa) promotes trade, investment, tourism, and cultural exchange between Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
