Tinubu Strengthens Strategic Partnership On Health, Education, Innovation; Confers National Honour On Bill Gates

Tuesday 3rd, June 2025, President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, conferred Nigeria’s national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates.
The CFR title is one of Nigeria’s highest national honours awarded to individuals in recognition of exceptional service to the nation.
The Presidency, in a post on X, said the honour is in recognition of Gates’ contributions to global health, education, and development, particularly in Nigeria and across Africa.
The post reads: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Mr Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Gates Foundation, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to global health, education, and development-particularly in Nigeria and across Africa.
“President Tinubu also met with Dr Ayuba Burki Gufwan, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NC PWD), in a symbolic moment that underscored Nigeria’s progress in eradicating polio and its continued commitment to building a healthier, more inclusive future for all.”
Gates, the Chairman of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is currently on a working visit to Africa, with stops in Ethiopia and Nigeria.
He met with President Tinubu on Tuesday in Lagos, where he discussed initiatives to strengthen Nigeria’s primary healthcare system.
Confirming the development on X, President Tinubu wrote: “Today, I conferred the Nigerian National Honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Mr Bill Gates #BillGates in recognition of his decades-long commitment to improving lives through interventions in global health & polio eradication, education, digital innovation, and agricultural development, especially in Nigeria and across Africa.
“Bill Gates’ contributions have saved millions through the Gates Foundation and many such initiatives, uplifted communities, and inspired global action.
“We also had meaningful conversations on deepening our collaboration in health systems, innovation, and youth development, reaffirming our shared belief that real progress begins when we invest in people. Nigeria remains open to ideas, partnerships, and actions that move humanity forward.”
President Tinubu commended Bill Gates for his unwavering commitment to humanity. He described Gates’ gesture as a remarkable inspiration to leaders worldwide, including himself.
“It is a day to share happiness and respect acknowledged to one of the greatest human beings that the world has brought. All I need to say is thank you, Bill Gates, for your indivisible commitment to humanity. It is highly remarkable, it is an inspiration to leadership across the world including the one standing before you. I thank you very much. That is all. It is a great thing to honour you”, he said.
