The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert warning of potential demonstrations expected to take place on Friday, March 13, urging residents and American citizens to remain vigilant and avoid large gatherings across the Nigerian capital and other major cities.
In the advisory released through the embassy’s official communication channels, officials stated that they had received information indicating that protests could occur in parts of Abuja and possibly extend to other urban centres across the country. While the alert did not specify the exact locations or groups expected to participate, it emphasized that demonstrations could develop quickly and potentially disrupt normal activities.
“The U.S. Embassy is aware of potential demonstrations planned for March 13 in Abuja and possibly other major cities,” the notice stated. “Demonstrations may involve roadblocks, increased traffic congestion, and heightened police presence in certain areas.”
According to the advisory, citizens were encouraged to exercise caution, particularly around government facilities, public squares, and other locations that could attract crowds. The embassy warned that even peaceful gatherings have the potential to escalate unpredictably.
“U.S. citizens should avoid areas around protests and large gatherings, monitor local media for updates, and follow the instructions of local authorities,” the embassy said in the statement.
Security analysts note that such alerts are typically issued as a precautionary measure when there are indications of planned demonstrations, particularly in politically sensitive locations such as Abuja, the administrative headquarters of the federal government.
Authorities in Nigeria have not officially confirmed the scale or nature of the expected demonstrations as of Friday morning, but security agencies are understood to be monitoring developments closely in order to maintain public order.
The embassy also advised individuals to maintain a heightened level of personal security awareness throughout the day, avoid unnecessary travel to areas where gatherings may occur, and have contingency plans in place should movement within the city become restricted.
“Review your personal security plans, keep identification documents readily accessible, and maintain communication with family members or colleagues about your movements,” the advisory added.
In addition to residents in Abuja, the alert indicated that individuals in other major cities should remain attentive to local developments and exercise caution in public spaces, as demonstrations can spread or emerge in multiple locations without advance notice.
The embassy concluded by encouraging American citizens in Nigeria to enroll in its security notification system to receive real-time updates and emergency messages, noting that the mission would continue to monitor the situation and provide further guidance if necessary.
