Adebayo Declares Tinubu’s Administration a “Historic Disaster” Amid Economic Turmoil

    Manny Ita  –

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has issued a blistering assessment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, characterizing his tenure as a “historic disaster” for the Nigerian federation. Speaking on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the legal practitioner and politician, who has become one of the administration’s most vocal critics, claimed that the current government has failed to provide a viable roadmap for the country’s economic recovery or national security stability. Adebayo asserted that the policy directions taken by the administration since 2023 have only served to deepen the hardships faced by the average citizen, citing the sustained inflationary pressure and the volatility of the national currency as evidence of systemic mismanagement.

The statement emphasized that the administration’s approach to governance has alienated key demographics and worsened the socio-economic divide across the country. “What we are witnessing today is not just a period of economic downturn, but a historic disaster that has compromised the future of the Nigerian youth,” Adebayo remarked during a press briefing. He further alleged that the presidency has been more focused on political consolidation—evidenced by recent debates over electoral reforms which he termed a “rigging blueprint for 2027″—than on addressing the “existential threats” of insecurity and poverty. “The bold promises of ‘Renewed Hope’ have unfortunately morphed into a cycle of despair for millions who can no longer afford basic commodities,” he added.

Adebayo’s critique aligns with his previous assertions that the administration suffers from “economic illiteracy,” particularly regarding the dual impact of fuel subsidy removal and the floating of the Naira. Despite the administration’s previous claims of making “tough but necessary” decisions to stabilize the economy, the SDP chieftain argued that the lack of a transparent social safety net has left the most vulnerable Nigerians exposed. He noted that the cumulative effect of these policies, enacted without adequate domestic production capacity, has created a “perfect storm” of fiscal instability. “You cannot build a house by tearing down the foundation and expecting the roof to stay afloat; this government is presiding over a historic disaster of its own making,” the statement concluded, calling for a radical shift in economic strategy.

The Tinubu administration has dismissed these criticisms as “exaggerated pessimism” and “misinformation” designed to heat up the polity ahead of the next electoral cycle. Their defense rests on three pillars:

      1. Macroeconomic Reform: The Presidency argues that they are performing “economic surgery” to fix decades of “consumption without productivity.” They cite the stabilization of the Naira in certain quarters as proof that the reforms are beginning to work.
      2. Social Safety Nets: Officials highlight the “Renewed Hope” interventions, including direct cash transfers to over 3 million families and the student loan scheme, which they claim has allowed 400,000 students to stay in school.
      3. Legislative Milestones: Just this week, President Tinubu signed the Kampala Convention Bill into law, which the administration frames as a major humanitarian win to protect internally displaced persons (IDPs) and mitigate the effects of climate change and insecurity.

”To suggest that Nigerians are hungry without recognizing the government’s ongoing interventions perpetuates despair instead of empowering citizens with the truth.” — Official Statement from the State House.
