Uber has introduced a new hotel booking feature within its app as part of its strategy to evolve into a comprehensive “everything app.” The service, developed in partnership with Expedia, allows users to search and reserve hotel rooms from a selection of more than 700,000 properties. The feature integrates travel tools such as maps, filters, and pricing options, while enabling payments through saved card details already stored in the Uber platform. According to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the company is expanding beyond ride-hailing and food delivery to become a unified platform for a wide range of everyday services. Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said the collaboration is aimed at simplifying travel planning and reducing the steps required to complete bookings. Uber also plans to extend the partnership to include short-term rental listings through Vrbo in the future. The move reflects a broader global trend toward multifunctional apps that combine services like transport, shopping, and payments in a single ecosystem, similar to platforms such as WeChat and Alipay in China. Other tech companies are also pursuing similar “super app” models, including Airbnb, which has added experiences and personal services, and X, which is exploring financial services integration. Uber further revealed plans to incorporate AI-powered tools, including meal planning, shopping list creation, delivery coordination, and a voice assistant for navigating the app.

UBA Unveils Next-Gen POS Terminals and Upgraded MONI App to Empower SMEs Across Africa

In a bold move to revolutionize Africa’s digital payment ecosystem and support small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), Africa’s Global Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has launched its enhanced Point of Sale (POS) Terminal and a newly upgraded UBA MONI App under its strategic campaign titled: “Innovation for Progress: Empowering SMEs, Connecting Communities, Simplifying Banking.”

The launch underscores UBA’s commitment to building a future-ready financial landscape that meets the growing demands of merchants, agents, and customers across the continent.

The newly improved POS terminals are set to redefine how merchants conduct transactions. Designed for efficiency and transparency, the next-gen POS features instant settlement, real-time transaction monitoring, pay-by-link functionality, and a 100% transaction success rate—all key features aimed at boosting trust and reliability in business operations.

With the flexibility to support businesses of all sizes, UBA’s POS offers the speed, convenience, and dependability that modern-day merchants demand.

Further strengthening its agency banking network, UBA also unveiled a major upgrade to its UBA MONI App, offering agents and customers an even more intuitive, secure, and efficient platform.

The new version of the app comes with enhanced features such as:

    Instant settlement

    Pay-by-transfer options

    Secret question security layer

    Improved inbox messaging

    Redesigned user interface

These are in addition to core functionalities like instant account opening using BVN/NIN, real-time funds transfer, cash deposits and withdrawals, airtime/data payments with agent discounts, and instant POS deployment.

Speaking during the unveiling, Shamsideen Fashola, UBA’s Group Head, Retail and Digital Banking, emphasized the bank’s customer-first philosophy and innovation-driven approach.

“At UBA, we are constantly innovating to provide seamless and secure payment solutions for businesses of all sizes. The new UBA PoS and MONI App is designed to empower merchants and agency banking with instant settlements, real-time transaction tracking, and unmatched reliability – ensuring they can focus on growing their businesses with a trusted partner,” he said.

Fashola added that the upgraded tools are not just about technology but about enabling economic transformation and empowering communities.

“This next-generation PoS is not just a payment device; it’s a powerful tool that helps businesses stay competitive in a fast-paced economy. With UBA’s extensive reach and robust infrastructure, we are bringing convenience and confidence to every transaction. The MONI App upgrade equips our agents—especially those in underserved areas—with faster tools, greater transparency, and an enhanced experience to serve millions better.”

With this dual launch, UBA reinforces its position as a leading force in Africa’s digital banking evolution. By simplifying banking processes, enhancing user experience, and fostering inclusive economic growth, the bank continues to chart a path for innovation, progress, and prosperity on the continent.
