The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) has confirmed that an explosion occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, on a gas pipeline belonging to its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), in the Aleto community of Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The company said it was deeply concerned by reports of injuries and damage to homes and businesses, adding that its thoughts were with affected residents and their families. It said protecting lives and preventing further harm remained its immediate priorities.
NNPC chief corporate communications officer, Andy Odeh, said NGIC had activated its emergency response procedures and isolated the affected pipeline segment to limit the impact of the incident. He said the subsidiary was working with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to coordinate the response and assess the impact on people, property and the environment.
NNPC Limited said it was also engaging host community leadership to understand immediate needs and coordinate appropriate support for those affected. The Eleme monarch, Emere Dr Philip Osaro Obele, had reportedly given the Nigerian Gas Company 24 hours to address the damage and assist affected residents.
The company said the cause of the explosion and the full extent of its impact were still being assessed. It said relevant operational information, including previous reports and actions taken, would be reviewed to support a clear understanding of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
