In a symbolic prelude to the upcoming state visit of Nigeria’s president to the United Kingdom, King Charles III hosted members of the Nigerian diaspora at a special reception held at St James’s Palace on March 11 and 12.
The reception brought together prominent Nigerians living in the United Kingdom, cultural figures and community leaders in what palace officials described as a celebration of the longstanding historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Britain. Guests at the event were treated to elements of Nigerian culture, including traditional cuisine such as Jollof Rice and a musical performance by the Afrobeats Orchestra, which blended orchestral arrangements with contemporary African rhythms.
Palace representatives said the gathering was intended to acknowledge the contributions of Nigerians in the United Kingdom and highlight the deep cultural connections between the two countries. “The reception reflects the importance of the Nigerian community in the UK and celebrates the richness of Nigerian culture,” a palace official said.
The event also serves as a lead-up to the official state visit of Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is scheduled to be received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla from March 18 to 19, 2026.
Diplomatic sources note that the visit carries historical significance as it will mark the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom in 37 years, the last occurring in 1989 during Nigeria’s military era.
Officials familiar with the preparations said discussions during the visit are expected to touch on trade, cultural cooperation, security collaboration and the strengthening of bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
“The visit represents an opportunity to deepen diplomatic engagement and reinforce the longstanding partnership between both countries,” a government source said, noting that the ceremonial reception at St James’s Palace had already set the tone for what is expected to be a significant moment in contemporary Nigeria-UK relations.
President Tinubu’s visit will include formal meetings, ceremonial engagements with the British royal family and interactions with members of the Nigerian diaspora community in the United Kingdom. Officials say the engagements are designed to strengthen diplomatic ties while highlighting Nigeria’s cultural and economic presence on the global stage.
