An attack on the secretariat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the private residence of former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, has heightened tension in Benin City, Edo State. The incidents occurred amid reports of political unrest in parts of the city.
Sources said unknown assailants vandalised sections of the ADC office and targeted the residence of Oyegun, causing property damage and forcing residents in the area to flee temporarily. Security operatives were later deployed to restore order, while investigations into the attacks commenced.
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi was reportedly attending a political event in the vicinity at the time of the unrest but escaped unharmed. Witnesses said the situation triggered panic among supporters and residents, with many scrambling for safety as security personnel intervened.
A party official condemned the attacks, describing them as an assault on democratic institutions and political tolerance. “Violence has no place in our politics, and those responsible must be brought to justice,” the official said, calling on security agencies to ensure the safety of political actors and public facilities.
Authorities in Edo State have yet to release an official casualty figure, and it remains unclear whether arrests have been made in connection with the incidents. Police sources indicated that patrols have been intensified in sensitive areas to prevent further disturbances and reassure residents.
Political observers warn that the attack could escalate tensions ahead of future political activities in the state if not swiftly addressed, urging all parties to exercise restraint and pursue lawful channels for resolving grievances.
