Nigeria’s military has reported the killing of at least 65 armed bandits in a large-scale operation carried out in the northwestern part of the country, marking what authorities describe as a significant breakthrough in the fight against criminal groups responsible for widespread violence and mass abductions.
The operation took place in Zamfara State, a region that has remained one of the epicenters of banditry in Nigeria. According to a security report, the offensive involved coordinated air and ground assaults that lasted several hours and targeted hideouts used by the armed gangs. Military officials said the operation was conducted in a different location from a recent abduction site, as security forces continue efforts to track down perpetrators linked to the kidnapping of villagers earlier in the week.
Local authorities had previously confirmed a mass kidnapping in which armed men invaded several communities during coordinated night raids. Residents reported that dozens of attackers stormed multiple villages, resulting in fatalities and the abduction of many civilians. While exact figures remain unverified by officials, community accounts suggest that around 150 people may have been taken, prompting an intensified search and rescue response.
Zamfara State and other parts of northwestern Nigeria have faced persistent insecurity for years, driven largely by armed groups locally referred to as bandits. These groups are known for carrying out raids on rural communities, abducting residents for ransom, rustling cattle, and destroying property. Their activities have contributed to widespread displacement and a humanitarian crisis affecting thousands of families.
Security analysts note that the roots of banditry in the region can be traced to longstanding conflicts between herders and farmers over land and water resources, which have been further aggravated by environmental pressures. Over time, these conflicts evolved into organized criminal networks involved in kidnapping and illegal trade, with some groups reportedly collaborating with other armed factions operating in different parts of the country.
The latest military operation is being presented by authorities as part of broader efforts to restore stability and weaken the operational capacity of these groups. However, challenges remain, as bandit networks are often highly mobile and operate across difficult terrain, making sustained enforcement efforts complex.
Security forces have continued to deploy combined strategies involving intelligence gathering, aerial surveillance, and ground offensives in an attempt to curb the activities of armed groups. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the abducted villagers, with police and military units maintaining search operations in affected areas.
