The final two cocoa farmers abducted in Ondo State have regained their freedom, bringing a wave of relief to local communities and stakeholders in the agricultural sector following weeks of anxiety over their safety.
Police authorities in the state confirmed the development, stating that the victims were rescued through coordinated security operations that also led to the arrest of several suspects linked to the kidnapping. The operation marks the conclusion of efforts to secure the release of all farmers taken during the incident, which had heightened concerns about safety in farming communities.
A spokesperson for the command said, “Our operatives, acting on credible intelligence, carried out a series of targeted operations that led to the safe rescue of the remaining victims and the apprehension of those responsible. Investigations are ongoing to ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.”
The abduction, which had disrupted farming activities in parts of the state, particularly among cocoa producers, sparked fears over the security of agricultural workers and the potential impact on local production. Residents had earlier called for increased security presence in rural areas, warning that persistent attacks could discourage farming activities.
Following the rescue, members of the affected communities expressed relief and gratitude to security agencies. A local farmer said, “We are thankful that our people are back safely. This situation has caused a lot of fear, but we hope this will restore confidence for farmers to return fully to their work.”
Authorities noted that the rescued individuals are receiving medical attention and psychological support, while efforts are ongoing to strengthen surveillance and response mechanisms across vulnerable communities in the state.
Police further assured residents that additional security measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding lives and property. “We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to support security agencies with timely and useful information,” the spokesperson added.
The incident had underscored the broader challenge of rural insecurity affecting farming communities in parts of Nigeria, with stakeholders repeatedly calling for sustained intervention to protect agricultural value chains and ensure food security.
With the successful rescue and arrests, residents say there is renewed hope that normalcy will return to affected areas, even as calls persist for long-term strategies to address the root causes of such security breaches.
