Nigerian international Ademola Lookman marked his Atletico Madrid debut with a goal as Diego Simeone’s side dismantled Real Betis 5-0 on Thursday evening to secure a place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals. The 28-year-old, who joined the club from Atalanta in the final days of the January transfer window, appeared as a second-half substitute at the Metropolitano and quickly capitalized on his first appearance in Spanish football.
Lookman’s contribution came during a dominant team performance where he successfully navigated the Betis defense to score the visitors’ third goal. After racing into the box, the winger evaded two defenders before striking a low shot into the bottom corner. Speaking after the match, manager Diego Simeone praised the attacker’s unique profile within the current squad. “His characteristics speak for themselves; he’s different from the players we have,” Simeone told reporters. “He’s more of a one-on-one player than a team player, although he has that aspect, but he allows us to play in several positions. He had a great impact.”
The Atletico manager further emphasized Lookman’s maturity and potential for growth during a post-match interview with Movistar. “He’s a big guy, he’s 28 years old. He came to help us and hopefully we’ll help him so he can continue to grow,” Simeone stated. “He has different qualities than the players we have and that will make us better.”
The emphatic victory was tempered by fitness concerns regarding two key players. Striker Julian Alvarez was left on the bench for the duration of the match, while midfielder Pablo Barrios was forced off early in the second half. Simeone confirmed that Alvarez had been struggling with illness, noting, “Julian didn’t feel well last night. This morning he tried to play, but he wasn’t strong enough for the game, and we agreed with the doctor that he shouldn’t start.” The outlook for Barrios appeared more clinical, with Simeone describing him as the team’s “best midfielder” and predicting an injury layoff that will “surely keep him out for a couple of games.”
Atletico Madrid, currently trailing La Liga leaders Barcelona by 10 points, will face Real Betis again this Sunday in domestic league action. Despite the injury setbacks, Simeone expressed satisfaction with the club’s trajectory during his 14-year tenure, stating that the rising standards of the team “speaks very well of what we are doing.”
