Manager of Arsenal F.C., Mikel Arteta has showered praise on teenage midfielder Max Dowman after the 16-year-old became the youngest scorer in the history of the Premier League during Arsenal’s 2–0 victory against Everton F.C. at the Emirates Stadium.
The result strengthened Arsenal’s position at the top of the league table, moving the club 10 points clear as the title race enters a decisive phase of the season.
Arteta described the moment as one of the most memorable he has experienced on the touchline, praising both the team’s persistence and the atmosphere inside the stadium after a match that had remained tightly contested for most of the game.
“It was sensational,” the Spanish manager said after the final whistle. “It’s one of the best moments that I have experienced in the dugout. The team showed incredible desire over the last few months and today they kept believing.”
Arsenal had dominated large spells of the match and registered 13 shots in the first half but struggled to break down a disciplined Everton defence. The breakthrough eventually arrived late in the game when Dowman’s cross caused confusion in the Everton penalty area, forcing an error from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford which allowed Viktor Gyokeres to tap into an empty net.
Moments later, Dowman sealed the victory in dramatic fashion by clearing a late corner before launching a long solo run from deep inside his own half and finishing into an unguarded goal, securing his place in the record books as the league’s youngest-ever scorer at 16 years and 73 days.
Arteta said his decision to introduce the teenager with about 15 minutes remaining was influenced by the youngster’s performances in training and his ability to compete with the club’s senior defenders.
“I think the decision that you make has to be delivered,” Arteta said. “You have to see him train every single day, he does it against these defenders who are in my opinion the best in the world.”
The Arsenal manager added that the midfielder’s temperament played a key role in his selection at such a crucial stage of the match.
“It was a moment for him, probably because he doesn’t seem to be phased by the occasion, the opponent or the game,” Arteta said.
Arteta also revealed that his instructions to the substitutes before they entered the pitch were deliberately simple as Arsenal searched for a breakthrough.
“Go and do your thing and win us the game,” he said he told the bench, explaining that moments of individual brilliance can often decide tightly contested matches.
Despite the excitement surrounding Dowman’s historic achievement, Arteta urged caution regarding expectations for the young player’s immediate future.
“Calm! Let’s come down to Earth and enjoy the day,” he said when asked whether the academy prospect could soon become a regular starter.
Arteta instead stressed the importance of maintaining the collective focus of the squad as Arsenal continue their push for silverware across competitions, praising what he described as the team’s strong determination to win matches regardless of the circumstances.
