FA Hands Down 10-Match Ban For Discriminatory Conduct

The Football Association has brought in tougher sanctions for discriminatory conduct, with players found guilty of aggravated discrimination offences now facing a minimum suspension of 10 matches from the new season.

The strengthened rules, which also apply to managers and individuals in technical areas, are part of the FA’s efforts to eliminate discrimination from football, according to BBC Sport on Thursday.

Under the previous regulations, suspensions for aggravated breaches of FA Rule E3.2 ranged between six and 12 matches.

The rule covers misconduct involving references to ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, religion, sex, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation or disability.

The FA said the tougher measures were necessary despite progress made in tackling discrimination across the game.

The FA said in a statement, “While significant progress has been made in recent years, discriminatory conduct continues to be a challenge across the game.

“Enhanced measures are necessary to tackle this abhorrent conduct,.’

A regulatory commission may impose a punishment longer than the new 10-match minimum where there are significant aggravating factors.

However, shorter suspensions of at least six matches may still be considered in cases where there are mitigating circumstances or where an individual admits the offence at the earliest opportunity. Such reductions will no longer be the standard approach but will only apply in exceptional situations.

The FA also warned that individuals found guilty of two or more aggravated discrimination breaches on separate occasions could face bans exceeding 12 matches or lengthy time-based suspensions in the most serious cases.

The move reinforces the FA’s commitment to creating a football environment free from discrimination and ensuring stronger consequences for those who engage in abusive or discriminatory behaviour.
