Members of the Iran women’s national football team have reportedly been placed under house arrest after refusing to sing the national anthem associated with the ruling government, according to claims made by a commentator during a broadcast discussion.
The allegations were highlighted by James Macpherson, a host on Sky News Australia, who said the players were facing restrictions after their protest during a football event drew criticism from state media figures in Iran.
Speaking during a televised segment, Macpherson said the team’s decision not to sing the anthem had been interpreted by pro-government commentators as an act of disloyalty to the state.
“The Iranian women’s football team is under house arrest after refusing to sing the regime’s national anthem,” Macpherson said while discussing the development.
According to him, a commentator on Iranian state television publicly condemned the players and reportedly described them as “traitors” to the country following the incident.
Mr Macpherson said the strong rhetoric used by state media figures illustrates the intense political pressure that can follow public acts perceived as dissent within the country.
“It’s amazing how having state TV call for your imprisonment or worse, changes one’s demeanour,” he said.
The reported restrictions come amid a broader pattern in which athletes and public figures in Iran have faced scrutiny or disciplinary measures after making symbolic gestures during sporting events that are interpreted as criticism of the authorities.
International human rights groups have previously raised concerns about the treatment of athletes who express political views or engage in protests during competitions, particularly when those actions involve national symbols such as the anthem.
While the claims about house arrest have circulated in media commentary, officials in Iran had not publicly issued detailed statements addressing the specific allegations regarding the women’s national team at the time the report was discussed.
The situation has nonetheless drawn attention internationally, with observers noting that sport has increasingly become a platform through which athletes express social or political grievances, sometimes placing them at odds with government authorities.
