The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has called on women to embrace their vital roles as nation-builders and support one another in their various endeavours.

She made this call during the maiden edition of the Lagos-West Women Assembly, which was tagged “Building Stronger Community,” held on Tuesday at Agidingbi, Ikeja.

Speaking at the event organised by Senator Idiat Adebule, Sanwo-Olu described women as essential to the progress of any society, emphasising their unique capacity to nurture families, uphold moral values, and drive enterprise.

“As we engage in discussions today, I urge every woman here to embrace her role as a nation-builder. We are builders of families, pillars of moral values, stewards of enterprise, and architects of peace.

“Let us continue to uphold unity, advocate inclusivity, and create safe, supportive spaces for all women,” she said.

She commended the state government’s commitment to gender equity, economic empowerment, and the protection of women’s rights under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“To every woman present here today, I salute your courage, your strength, and your unwavering commitment to progress.

“You are the heartbeat of our homes, the glue of our communities, and the light that brightens the future of Lagos State and Nigeria,” she added.

Highlighting the importance of gatherings like the Lagos-West Women Assembly, Sanwo-Olu said such platforms echo the objectives of the National Women’s Conference organised annually by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials by promoting dialogue, mentorship, and empowerment.

“The theme of this assembly, ‘Building Stronger Community,’ speaks to a holistic vision for sustainable development, one that recognises the vital role of women in nurturing values, building enterprises, and shaping the future,” she said.

Sanwo-Olu also praised the empowerment grants presented to trained beneficiaries at the event, describing economic empowerment as both a policy necessity and a moral obligation.

She noted that more beneficiaries would receive tools and training in financial literacy and business management later in the week through initiatives from the Office of the First Lady.

In her welcome address, Senator Adebule stressed the indispensable role women play in society and the need to address the challenges they face.

She said, “As women, we are the heart and backbone of our society. Wherever there are women, there is focus, balance, love, compassion, happiness, nourishment, and purposefulness.”

Adebule acknowledged the persistent barriers women face due to socio-economic inequalities and cultural practices, which, she said, hinder their ability to thrive and reach leadership positions.

“These and some other considerations inspired me to facilitate this first Lagos-West Women Assembly. The theme of today’s assembly calls upon women to recognise that collaborative engagement is the key to breaking all barriers limiting their ability to excel and be counted among the leading lights of our communities,” Adebule added.
