Uber has introduced a new hotel booking feature within its app as part of its strategy to evolve into a comprehensive “everything app.” The service, developed in partnership with Expedia, allows users to search and reserve hotel rooms from a selection of more than 700,000 properties. The feature integrates travel tools such as maps, filters, and pricing options, while enabling payments through saved card details already stored in the Uber platform. According to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the company is expanding beyond ride-hailing and food delivery to become a unified platform for a wide range of everyday services. Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said the collaboration is aimed at simplifying travel planning and reducing the steps required to complete bookings. Uber also plans to extend the partnership to include short-term rental listings through Vrbo in the future. The move reflects a broader global trend toward multifunctional apps that combine services like transport, shopping, and payments in a single ecosystem, similar to platforms such as WeChat and Alipay in China. Other tech companies are also pursuing similar “super app” models, including Airbnb, which has added experiences and personal services, and X, which is exploring financial services integration. Uber further revealed plans to incorporate AI-powered tools, including meal planning, shopping list creation, delivery coordination, and a voice assistant for navigating the app.

MOJEC gives support to Tinubu on ban of importation

MOJEC gives support to Tinubu on ban of importation

The Chairman of MOJEC, Mrs Mojisola Abdul, has commended President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Nigeria First Policy’, which bans the importation of products that could be produced locally.

MOJEC, a meter manufacturing company, boasts of millions of electricity meters supplied locally. In a statement on Friday, Abdul described the policy as a bold and visionary move that signals a new dawn for Nigeria’s industrial and economic advancement.

Speaking on the policy, which prioritises the patronage of locally manufactured goods and services, specifically in government procurement, Abdul stated, “President Tinubu’s ‘Nigeria First Policy’ is a strategic and transformative initiative that will unlock the vast potential of Nigerian industries.

“It is a critical step towards achieving national industrial rebirth and economic independence. As a proudly indigenous metering and energy solutions provider, MOJEC International wholeheartedly commends this policy and stands ready to support its successful implementation.”

She noted that the directive aligns perfectly with MOJEC’s long-standing commitment to local content and national capacity building.

“For us at MOJEC, this is more than policy; it is a philosophy we live by. As our guiding phrase goes, ‘Africa, and by extension, Nigeria, must begin to produce what it consumes.’ This mindset has shaped our operations, our investments, and our impact in the Nigerian power sector for over two decades.”

Abdul hoped that the policy would catalyse industrial expansion, create jobs, and promote local content, particularly in the power and energy sector, where MOJEC continues to play a “pioneering” role.

“MOJEC International has consistently led the charge in Nigeria’s metering revolution, delivering millions of meters across various government-backed initiatives. According to available data sources, MOJEC deployed over 600,000 Non-Maximum Demand meters and Maximum Demand meters nationwide before the privatisation of the power sector.

“Furthermore, during the CAPMI and Vendor Financing schemes (2013-2018), the company served as the lead metering partner, deploying and financing more than 1 million NMD and MD meters. Under NMMP Phase 0, MAP Phases I & II (2019- Date), MOJEC has supplied over 1.2 million meters, in partnership with various DisCos and across several states.

“To date, MOJEC has pioneered the deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure and Meter Data Management Systems in Nigeria, deployed over 3 million smart NMD meters nationwide, and installed over 200,000 MD smart meters, representing approximately 60 per cent of total meters deployed within the NESI. These achievements are testament to the company’s reliability, scale, and capacity as a trusted local manufacturer and strategic government partner,” the statement disclosed.

In line with its backward integration strategy, MOJEC said it operates a “state-of-the-art” plastic manufacturing subsidiary, which houses one of the largest plastic production facilities in the country, with an annual installed capacity of up to 2 million meter boxes.

“Furthermore, MOJEC, through its renewable energy subsidiary, Virtuitis Solaris (VSolaris), is extending access to clean, affordable power to rural and off-grid communities. A flagship project under this mandate is the planned commissioning of an 880kWp Solar Hybrid Isolated Minigrid across seven communities in Langtang South, Shendam, and Bokkos LGAs in Plateau State, executed under the REA’s Nigeria Electrification Project,” it was added.

The General Manager of VSolaris, Ayodeji Oladeji, said the presidential initiative marks a significant milestone in the quest for sustainable energy access in Nigeria.

“We are not just bringing power to these communities, we’re unlocking new economic and social opportunities for businesses, schools, and healthcare systems. The mini-grid is expected to power thousands of homes and businesses, enabling economic activities, education, and healthcare services,” Oladeji noted.

The statement concluded, “President Tinubu’s Nigeria First Policy is more than a government directive, it’s a rallying cry for economic self-reliance, technological growth, and inclusive development. MOJEC stands as a shining example of what Nigerian companies can achieve when supported by enabling policies.

As MOJEC continues to scale its impact across urban and rural communities alike, this policy provides the needed momentum to drive industrial growth, create jobs, and ensure that power truly gets to the people, by Nigerians, for Nigerians.”
