Google unveils AI footprint in Ghana, Africa

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation of Ghana, Samuel George, alongside Google executives, at the launch of the AI hub in Accra.

Google is cementing its position in the field of artificial intelligence with the launch of its first AI Community Centre in Africa, located in Accra, Ghana.

The initiative is part of a broader $37m investment to advance AI development across the continent, the technology giant said in an email.

The centre, described as the first of its kind on the continent, is designed to serve as a hub for AI learning, experimentation, and collaboration.

It will host training sessions, community events, and workshops focused on responsible AI development and is expected to play a critical role in nurturing local talent and expanding the continent’s capacity for AI-driven innovation.

According to Senior Vice President for Research, Labs, and Technology & Society at Google, Dr. James Manyika, the investment reflects Google’s long-term commitment to Africa’s digital transformation.

“Africa is home to some of the most important and inspiring work in AI today. We are committed to supporting the next wave of innovation through long-term investment, local partnerships, and platforms that help researchers and entrepreneurs build solutions that matter,” Dr. Manyika said.

The AI Community Centre in Accra will operate across four thematic pillars—AI literacy, community technology, social impact, and arts and culture—providing an inclusive space for developers, students, researchers, and creatives to engage with emerging technologies grounded in African priorities.

Vice President of Engineering and Research at Google, Dr. Yossi Matias, said the facility represents more than just infrastructure.

“This new wave of investment reflects our belief in the talent, creativity, and ingenuity across the continent. By building with local communities and institutions, we’re supporting solutions that are rooted in Africa’s realities and built for global impact,” Matias stated.

The establishment of the centre is part of a comprehensive AI investment strategy by Google, which includes funding to support food security, African language inclusion, digital skills development, and academic research.

Already announced under this strategy is the AI for Food Security Collaborative, a multi-stakeholder initiative supported by a $25m grant from Google.org. The project brings together governments, researchers, and nonprofits to develop AI tools for early hunger forecasting, crop resilience, and customised support for smallholder farmers across Africa.

In addition, a $3m grant has been awarded to Masakhane, an open research collective focused on building AI tools in more than 40 African languages. The funding will support the creation of high-quality datasets, speech technologies, and machine translation systems, helping to make digital content more accessible to millions in their native tongues.

To drive innovation among entrepreneurs, Google also introduced a catalytic funding platform aimed at supporting over 100 early-stage AI startups in agriculture, healthcare, education, and other key sectors. These startups will receive not just funding but also technical mentorship, access to Google’s tools, and guidance to ensure responsible AI development.

On skills development, Google has pledged 100,000 fully funded Google Career Certificate scholarships for students in Ghana. These self-paced programmes will cover areas such as AI Essentials, Prompting Essentials, IT Support, Data Analytics, and Cybersecurity, equipping young Africans with job-ready skills for the evolving digital economy.

Google.org also announced an additional $7m to support AI talent development in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana. The funding will go towards building localised AI curricula, cybersecurity education, and online safety training through academic institutions and nonprofits.

As part of efforts to strengthen Africa’s AI research landscape, two $1m research grants have also been announced. One goes to the African Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Pretoria to support applied AI research and training, while the other will support the Wits Machine Intelligence and Neural Discovery Institute in South Africa to fund MSc and PhD students working on foundational AI projects.

These new initiatives build on Google’s ongoing work across the continent, including AI-powered maternal health dashboards in Ghana and Nigeria, wildfire alerts in East Africa, and regional language models developed by teams in Accra and Nairobi.
