WeInHR Conference 2025 – Shaping the Future of Work in Africa

The WeInHR Conference 2025 convened some of the finest HR leaders across Africa and beyond, creating a powerful platform to exchange brilliance, share practical strategies, and mentor the next generation of professionals shaping the world of work.

The conference was hosted by Oluwatobi James Taiwo (Akinwande), Founder of WeInHR, who welcomed participants from across the continent and the diaspora, reminding them of the vital role HR plays in shaping Africa’s future. His opening remarks set the tone for a gathering that celebrated the brilliance of HR professionals while also challenging them to drive meaningful change within their organizations.

The event opened with a keynote by Rabison Shumba, respected leadership consultant and global speaker, who inspired participants to reimagine Africa’s future of work and embrace digital transformation and AI. He challenged HR professionals to evolve into predictive and prescriptive practitioners, ready to lead Africa’s workforce into the future.

This year’s program featured two impactful panel discussions:

The Retention Playbook: Building Cultures People Don’t Want to Leave – Panelists Olubenga Akinsanya, Dr. Mojisola Olubumo, and Ejiro Ogunbanjo explored how organizations can build people-centered cultures through meaningful work, clear growth pathways, and data-driven insights.

They emphasized that retention is not only an HR responsibility but a strategic business imperative.

From redefining retention as a business-wide priority to introducing innovative listening tools like Vibe Checks, the discussion showed how organizations can shift from job-based to skill-based approaches to sustain employee growth and commitment.

Using AI to Solve Real HR Problems – Panelists Lauren Clarke, Ayokunle Okungbowa, and Ezinne Obiora shared practical ways HR can leverage AI to automate repetitive tasks, enhance decision-making, and forecast talent needs. They underscored the importance of keeping human connections at the heart of AI adoption while positioning HR at the forefront of AI leadership.

Actionable strategies included starting small with one tool at a time, automating routine processes, and ensuring AI serves as an enabler of stronger human connections rather than a threat to job security.

Each HR leader in attendance was challenged by the host and founder, Oluwatobi James Taiwo (Akinwande), to leave the conference with at least one major action to implement within their organizations.

More than a conference, WeInHR served as a mentorship hub, where established HR leaders guided rising practitioners, sparking cross-generational conversations and inspiring meaningful action. The event reinforced that HR’s role in Africa extends beyond managing people, it is about shaping the continent’s future workforce with innovation, empathy, and foresight.

Next Steps for HR Practitioners emerging from the conference include:

    Elevating HR’s Strategic Role

    ● Redefine HR’s role in business strategy by taking active seats at decision-making tables to ensure people strategy is fully aligned with growth ambitions.

    ● Implement strategic workforce planning that anticipates organizational needs and aligns talent with business goals.

    ● Shift from reactive HR to predictive and prescriptive HR by using workforce analytics and scenario planning to anticipate talent gaps and opportunities.

    Strengthening Retention and Culture

    ● Map skill-based growth opportunities and communicate them clearly to employees at all levels.

    ● Empower managers as Chief Retention Officers by equipping them with coaching skills and linking retention outcomes directly to their KPIs.

    ● Personalize employee experiences through flexible benefits, recognition systems, and tailored learning pathways.

    ● Leverage alumni as brand ambassadors by building alumni networks that maintain ties with former staff, strengthening both brand and talent pipelines.

    Driving AI Adoption in HR

    ● Start small with AI pilots by automating one repetitive HR process (e.g., CV screening, leave management) to build confidence and demonstrate value.

    ● Make AI human-centric by using it to free HR professionals from administrative tasks, enabling greater focus on culture, mentoring, and leadership development.

    ● Educate the workforce on AI through internal workshops that demystify tools, reduce fear, and highlight AI as an enabler rather than a threat.

    ● Strengthen data privacy and ethics by developing clear governance frameworks to protect employee data and ensure transparency in AI-driven decisions.

    ● Adopt AI-powered talent forecasting tools to predict attrition, skill gaps, and hiring needs.

    ● Integrate AI into learning platforms to deliver personalized, adaptive training pathways for employees.

The WeInHR Conference 2025 reaffirmed that when Africa’s HR leaders unite to share brilliance, mentor, and innovate, they create not only better workplaces but also stronger, future-ready organizations across the continent.
