President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renewal of the tenure of Abubakar Audi as the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, reaffirming the federal government’s confidence in his leadership of the paramilitary institution.
The approval, conveyed through official government channels, extends Audi’s stay in office following the expiration of his initial tenure, allowing him to continue overseeing the Corps’ nationwide operations, including the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure.
Presidency sources indicated that the decision was informed by ongoing security priorities and the need for continuity in the management of internal security agencies amid evolving threats across the country. A senior government official familiar with the development stated, “The renewal reflects recognition of the Commandant-General’s performance and the administration’s commitment to sustaining stability within key security institutions.”
Since assuming office, Audi has supervised reforms aimed at strengthening operational capacity, enhancing collaboration with other security agencies, and expanding the Corps’ role in safeguarding pipelines, power installations, and other strategic facilities. According to an NSCDC official, “The Commandant-General has driven initiatives focused on professionalism, improved response capability, and protection of national economic assets.”
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps plays a complementary role to the armed forces and police in maintaining public safety, disaster response, and civil protection duties across the federation. Security analysts note that the tenure renewal is expected to ensure policy continuity while ongoing institutional reforms within the Corps are consolidated.
Government officials emphasized that the renewal aligns with broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security framework through experienced leadership. “Sustained leadership is critical at this time to consolidate gains already recorded in civil defence operations nationwide,” a presidency source added.
Audi is therefore expected to continue leading the Corps’ strategic initiatives as the federal government intensifies measures aimed at improving national security coordination and protecting vital infrastructure critical to economic stability.
