Governor Bassey Otu has been recognized as a “Tourism Champion” in acknowledgment of his administration’s renewed push to reposition Cross River State as a leading destination for leisure and cultural tourism in Nigeria.
The recognition comes amid a sweeping plan by the state government to rehabilitate and modernize some of its most iconic tourist assets, including the Obudu Ranch Resort, Agbokim Waterfalls, and the Marina Resort. These sites, once major attractions drawing both local and international visitors, have faced years of infrastructural decline and reduced patronage.
According to the governor, the revitalization project will involve comprehensive upgrades to facilities, improved access roads, enhanced security, and the introduction of new recreational features designed to meet global tourism standards. He emphasized that restoring these landmarks is central to boosting the state’s internally generated revenue and creating jobs for local communities.
In addition to infrastructure renewal, the government has also announced a major rebranding of the Calabar Carnival, widely regarded as Africa’s biggest street party. The rebranding effort is expected to elevate the festival’s global appeal through better organization, increased private sector participation, and strategic international marketing.
Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that Cross River has long held untapped potential due to its rich natural landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage. They expressed optimism that the renewed focus on tourism development could restore the state’s status as a premier destination and stimulate broader economic growth.
The administration maintains that the tourism revival agenda will be pursued through public-private partnerships, ensuring sustainability and long-term impact. With these commitments, Cross River State is positioning itself for a strong comeback on Nigeria’s tourism map.
