Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to the southern region of Nigeria, while reserving the 2031 slot for the north.
The decision was reached during the party’s national convention held in Abuja on Saturday. Delegates adopted the resolution following a motion presented by Afam Victor and seconded by Seyi Sowumi.
The convention also confirmed members of the party’s national executive committee after a separate motion moved by Victor Umeh.
According to party leaders, the zoning arrangement is part of the NDC’s broader strategy to maintain rotational leadership and ensure regional balance in future presidential contests.
Earlier in the week, Buba Galadima had hinted that the party had already agreed to cede the 2027 presidential ticket to the south. He also stated that the NDC would conduct primary elections instead of adopting a consensus candidate approach.
The latest development comes after earlier denials from party officials regarding reports of an existing zoning agreement and alleged political understandings involving former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Political observers say the move aligns with growing calls for power rotation and inclusiveness within opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 elections. The decision is also seen as consistent with the position repeatedly advocated by Peter Obi on equity and regional balance in national leadership.
