The Lagos State Waste Management Authority has assured residents that the growing waste backlog across the state will soon be cleared, following new measures aimed at improving waste disposal operations.

LAWMA Managing Director, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, gave the assurance during the commissioning of the rehabilitated Road E and newly constructed disposal platforms at the Olusosun Disposal Facility in the Ojota area of Lagos on Tuesday.

Gbadegesin said the project was a strategic intervention designed to remove operational challenges, improve access within the facility and boost the efficiency of waste evacuation across the state.

According to him, the additional space created at the facility would help LAWMA tackle the accumulation of refuse on Lagos roads as the agency works towards improving waste management services.

“We announced that we’re winding down activities at the site and that we have a timeline. We said 18 months from the time we carried out the groundbreaking on the construction of the transfer loading station,” he said.

He explained that the reclaimed portion of the facility would provide temporary space for waste disposal while the transition process continues.

Gbadegesin said the move would help clear the refuse backlog, adding that the presence of waste on roads was unacceptable.

“By opening this place, we’ve created more space. Over the next few days there won’t be refuse on our roads,” he said.

However, the LAWMA boss stressed that maintaining a clean Lagos requires the cooperation of residents. He urged Lagosians to stop dumping waste on roads, medians and other unauthorized areas, and instead use approved waste collection channels.

He advised residents to patronise their assigned Public Sector Participant (PSP) operators, pay for waste collection services promptly and contact LAWMA directly whenever they experience delays in refuse collection.

Gbadegesin added that achieving a cleaner Lagos remains a shared responsibility between the government and residents, noting that proper waste disposal practices are essential to sustaining a healthier environment.
