The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has secured continental recognition for its growing role in reshaping student financing, receiving a Certificate of Observership from the Association of African Higher Education Financing Agencies (AAHEFA).
The recognition followed NELFUND’s participation in the sixth International Conference and Annual General Meeting of AAHEFA in Accra, Ghana, where education financing agencies from 18 African countries converged to examine how technology could transform access to higher education financing across the continent.
The conference, with the theme, “Digital Transformation in Higher Education Financing: The Role of Technology Advancements in Ensuring Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Higher Education Financing Systems in Africa,” focused on the sustainability of student financing schemes and the deployment of digital tools to make them more inclusive and resilient.
NELFUND representatives, Monalisa Dike and Stephanie Abughdyer, presented Nigeria’s experience during the countries’ presentations at the AGM, contributing to discussions on emerging challenges and innovations in higher education financing.
The Fund’s active participation in the continental forum subsequently earned it formal recognition through the Certificate of Observership, which was presented to NELFUND Managing Director and Chief Executive, Akintunde Sawyerr.
Receiving the certificate, Sawyerr described the recognition as a significant milestone for NELFUND, saying it would strengthen the Fund’s visibility and engagement within Africa’s higher education financing community and on the global stage.
He said the platform would provide NELFUND with opportunities to learn from peer institutions while contributing Nigeria’s experience to the search for sustainable financing models for higher education across Africa.
Sawyerr also commended Dike for her commitment to strengthening NELFUND’s engagement and representation within the AAHEFA platform.
The recognition places NELFUND within a growing continental conversation over how African countries can deploy technology, data and digital platforms to tackle persistent barriers to financing higher education.
For the Fund, the engagement also provides an avenue to exchange knowledge and deepen partnerships with sister institutions as Nigeria continues efforts to expand access to education financing.
It said its participation underscored its commitment to building a financing system that is more inclusive, transparent, sustainable and resilient, while leveraging technology to improve access for Nigerian students.
