Kendrick Lamar made Recording Academy history on Sunday, officially becoming the rapper with the most Grammy Awards of all time. Lamar entered the ceremony with 22 career wins and exited with a total of 27, surpassing the previous record of 25 held by Jay-Z. The milestone comes after a dominant evening for the Compton artist, who secured victories in five distinct categories, marking the second consecutive year he has achieved a five-award sweep at the ceremony.
The record-breaking run was fueled largely by his latest body of work, GNX, which took home the award for Best Rap Album. Lamar also saw significant success for his collaborative efforts, winning Record of the Year and Best Melodic Rap Performance for the track “Luther” featuring SZA. His technical lyricism was further recognized as “TV Off,” featuring Lefty Gunplay, earned Best Rap Song, while his guest appearance on Clipse’s “Chains & Whips” secured the trophy for Best Rap Performance.
Industry analysts noted that the back-to-back hauls solidify Lamar’s standing as the most decorated figure in the genre’s history. During one of his several acceptance speeches, Lamar acknowledged the weight of the achievement, stating, “This isn’t just about a number; it’s about the culture we represent every time we pick up the microphone.” The shift in the all-time rankings places Lamar in a rare tier of artists across all genres, further distancing his trophy count from other contemporary hip-hop peers.
