Dr. Ije Akunyili has been appointed Chief Medical Officer of Jersey City Medical Center, becoming the first Black physician to hold the position since the hospital was founded in 1882. The appointment marks a historic milestone for the New Jersey-based institution, which is part of the RWJBarnabas Health system and serves as a major healthcare provider in Hudson County.
Jersey City Medical Center management announced the appointment this week, noting that Dr. Akunyili will oversee clinical operations and lead efforts aimed at improving patient safety, innovation and equity in care delivery. Her emergence as CMO places her among a small number of minority physicians occupying top executive clinical leadership roles in major United States hospitals.
Dr. Akunyili is the daughter of the late Professor Dora Akunyili, the former Director-General of Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), <span;>widely credited for reforms in drug regulation and public health advocacy in Nigeria.
Before her appointment, Dr. Akunyili built an extensive career in emergency medicine and healthcare administration. She previously served as Regional Medical Director for TeamHealth’s Northeast Group, where she provided clinical and strategic oversight for nearly 20 emergency departments and hospitalist service lines across five states, including New York and New Jersey.
Her academic background includes graduating summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University, and completing her medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Colleagues have described her career path as combining clinical excellence with strong operational leadership.
Reacting to her appointment, Dr. Akunyili expressed gratitude and outlined her priorities for the role. “I am grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to serving the residents of Hudson County and continuing to provide safe, innovative, efficient, and equitable care,” she said. “It is a true privilege to lead the clinical effort at Jersey City Medical Center and to create sustainable health outcomes for our community.”

In addition to her new role, Dr. Akunyili is known for her work in professional advocacy and currently serves as President of the Connecticut College of Emergency Physicians, where she has focused on physician welfare and improved emergency care systems. She has also been active in initiatives addressing healthcare access for underserved populations.
Her appointment has been commended by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, which described it as evidence of the growing impact of Nigerian professionals in global institutions. Observers say her emergence as Chief Medical Officer of Jersey City Medical Center underscores both individual achievement and broader progress in representation within international healthcare leadership.
