Funmi Adewara, a British-Nigerian physician and bioscience entrepreneur, has secured a multi-million-dollar strategic partnership to expand her telehealth platform, Mobihealth International, to 300 locations across Nigeria. The expansion is being executed in collaboration with financial and telecommunications institutions, including Union Bank and Airtel Nigeria, and is aimed at establishing walk-in telehealth clinics nationwide.
According to information released by the company, the new facilities will operate as hybrid healthcare hubs where patients can consult remotely with a global network of more than 100,000 medical professionals based in the United States, the United Kingdom and Nigeria. The clinics are designed to serve both urban populations and underserved rural communities, providing virtual consultations, diagnoses, prescriptions and specialist referrals through a single digital platform.
Mobihealth International has gained international recognition for its approach to addressing Africa’s shortage of healthcare professionals and limited medical infrastructure. The World Bank has recently identified the platform as a model for leveraging digital innovation to close healthcare gaps in emerging markets. This follows Dr. Adewara’s earlier recognition as a recipient of the World Bank SDG & Her Global Award, the first awarded to a Nigerian, and her selection for the $1 billion Timbuktoo HealthTech Hub accelerator programme in Kigali.
The company says its use of mobile technology and low-cost data services has significantly improved access to care, with reported reductions of up to 70 per cent in hospital waiting times and diagnostic costs for users. Analysts tracking Nigeria’s health sector have described the scale of the 2026 expansion as a major development for national health security.
As part of the rollout, Mobihealth has also partnered with Medplus Pharmacy and the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria to ensure patients can access verified medications and structured follow-up care after virtual consultations. Dr. Adewara, who spent more than 15 years working within the United Kingdom’s National Health Service before founding Mobihealth, said the initiative extends beyond digital convenience. “The World Bank has described healthtech as one of the most powerful tools to close gaps in healthcare globally. Our partnership ensures that every clinic is not just a place for medicine, but a gateway to timely and affordable life-saving care,” she said.
Beyond Nigeria, Mobihealth is expanding its operations into other African countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya and Egypt. Dr. Adewara also continues to contribute to international health policy discussions, advising institutions such as the African Development Bank on inclusive healthcare strategies.
Observers note that her work aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal on Good Health and Well-Being, with Mobihealth increasingly cited as evidence that African-led digital solutions can deliver scalable responses to complex global healthcare challenges.
