As Sanwo-Olu reveals Lagos Transport policies, inauguration of 15 new boats for transportation

L-R: Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Housing, Barr. Olukemi Ogunyemi; Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Cecilia Bolaji Dada; Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi; Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat; Member House of Representatives, Mushin ll Federal Constituency, Hon. Toyin Fayinka; Former Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa; his counterpart in the Central Business District and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Mrs. Bola Olumegbon-Lawal and Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih respectively at the unveiling of the Lagos State Transport Policy, held at Balmoral Convention Center, Sheraton, Ikeja on Tuesday.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said his administration is committed to implementing rigorous safety protocols to protect commuters, by leveraging cutting-edge technologies, to enhance traffic management and service delivery in the State.

The Governor stated this on Tuesday while speaking through the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat at the unveiling of the Lagos State Transport Policy, held at Sheraton, Ikeja, Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu stated that by unveiling the Lagos State Transport Policy, the state government is laying down a comprehensive framework that would guide the continued development and regulation of the state’s transportation sector.

He added that the policy encompasse the integrated Multi-Modal Transport System that ensures seamless connectivity between road, rail, and water transport modes and encourages sustainable practices by promoting environmentally friendly transportation options to reduce carbon footprint.

To make the policy more comprehensive, the governor announced the planned commissioning of 15 new boats that will take place tomorrow, May 29th, 2024, marking a revolution in water Transportation.

“Tomorrow, as we are marking the first anniversary of my government’s second term in office, additional 15 new boats, out of 25 would be commissioned at Badore tomorrow,” he said.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the policy is not just a document but it is a roadmap to a brighter, more effective, efficient, and sustainable future for Lagos.

He said the policy reflects the vision of the state government where transportation is no longer a challenge but a seamless experience that enhances the quality of life for all the residents.

He, therefore, called on all stakeholders, government agencies, private sector partners, and the citizens of Lagos to join hands with the state government in implementing this policy, noting that “Together, we can build a transportation system that is the pride of Africa, setting a benchmark for others to follow. Let us continue to work together to drive Lagos towards a future of unparalleled progress and prosperity.”

While elucidating the achievements of his administration in the transportation sector, the Governor recounted his pledge to the people of Lagos to revolutionise the transportation system, alleviate traffic congestion, and create a safer, more efficient, and sustainable environment for all.

“Today, as we unveil this policy, we are taking a significant step towards fulfilling that promise”. The state’s achievements in the transportation sector have been monumental and are worthy of recognition,” he noted.

The governor highlighted that the government has enhanced traffic management and enforcement by deploying Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices alongside Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras (ANPR).

He stated that the initiative has proven successful, with 26,816 violations captured in the first three months of this year alone.

Sanwo-Olu said since the inception of his administration, the ANPR Camera has recorded 856,680 violations, minimizing human intervention in traffic management and substantially curbing traffic violations and accidents.

“This includes expanding and rehabilitating some of the road network with ongoing efforts to further extend and rehabilitate additional routes, guaranteeing enhanced traffic efficiency, and highlighting the ongoing construction of the Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge,” he said.

Speaking further, Sanwo-Olu stated that his government has diligently revitalized water transport infrastructure through strategic investments in modern ferries and upgraded terminals.

“Both the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) now offer an efficient and scenic mode of transportation, alleviating congestion on the roads while providing a dependable alternative for both residents and visitors. Also, the LAGFERRY has successfully transported approximately 2 million passengers across Lagos Inland Waterways,” he stated.

Earlier, Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi stated that the policy provides a comprehensive framework for the continued development and regulation of the state transportation system, adding that the policy is not just a blueprint, but the government’s commitment to a future where transportation is no longer a barrier but a facilitator of progress and prosperity.

The commissioner said the Lagos State Transport Policy represents a bold step forward in the government’s collective efforts to transform the way people and goods are moved within the state.

He noted that crafted through extensive consultation with stakeholders, experts, and citizens, the policy embodies the government’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and inclusivity in all aspects of transportation planning and management.

Osiyemi applauded the Sanwo-Olu/Hamzat administration for the landmark achievement in the state transportation sector.

“The initiatives and projects launched over the past few years are a testament to the Governor’s dedication to improving the lives of our citizens,” he said.
