A Nigerian court has ordered the immediate release of Sheikh Sani Zaria, ruling that his restriction by security agencies was unlawful and a violation of his fundamental rights.
In its judgment, the court also awarded ₦6 million in damages against the involved security agencies, citing wrongful detention and infringement on personal liberty. The ruling emphasized that no individual should be held without due process under the law, reinforcing constitutional protections.
Legal representatives for Sheikh Sani Zaria welcomed the decision, describing it as a victory for justice and the rule of law. They noted that the judgment sends a strong message to authorities about the importance of respecting citizens’ rights.
While the security agencies are yet to issue an official response, the case has sparked renewed conversations around civil liberties, judicial independence, and accountability within Nigeria’s law enforcement system.
