Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has assured the people of Ijebuland that a new Awujale will emerge before May 29.
His Media Adviser, Kayode Akinmade, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
Abiodun gave the assurance at a stakeholders’ meeting for Ogun East Senatorial District in Ijebu Ode. The meeting was attended by representatives of different interest groups.
The governor said his administration was committed to ensuring a peaceful and acceptable process for selecting the new traditional ruler. He urged the people to remain calm and patient while the necessary steps were being completed.
Abiodun said the Awujale institution was important to the cultural heritage, identity and unity of Ijebuland.
He added that his administration was giving the succession process the attention it deserved to ensure that the new Awujale would enjoy the acceptance and support of the people.
The governor said the meeting was organised to strengthen engagement with grassroots stakeholders, address community concerns and highlight his administration’s achievements over the past seven years.
On economic development, Abiodun identified oil exploration around Eba Island and the proposed Gateway Deep-Sea Port in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area as major projects that could boost the state’s economy.
He said the proposed Blue Marine Special Economic Zone would attract investment, create jobs and make Ogun State a major centre for maritime trade, manufacturing and logistics.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and attracting investors. He thanked President Bola Tinubu for supporting key projects and initiatives in the state.
He urged residents and stakeholders to continue working together to promote peace and development.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona at the age of 91. The late monarch reigned for 65 years.
