Sheikh Sani Yahya Jingir
Islamic cleric and leader of the Izala Scholars Council, Sheikh Sani Jingir, has said he has no regrets over his talks on Muslim-Muslim ticket and description of Christians as “infidels.”
While speaking in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation, Jingir said he had no regrets over his recent declaration of support for a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, despite the criticism trailing the statement.
He said his position was not politically motivated or intended to campaign for President Bola Tinubu, but was based on his responsibility as a Muslim, adding that he would continue to support and encourage Muslims to back a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
He clarified that his position was shaped by his experiences and the treatment that Muslims had received in the past, Jingir insisted that Muslims have the right to determine who they support politically.
Further, he added that his advocacy was not a call for violence or discrimination against Christians. The cleric had urged Muslims to use their votes to support candidates who align with their interests, a position that has generated criticism from across different sections.
Defending his stance, however, Jingir questioned claims about Nigeria’s religious composition, challenging those who say that Christians constitute the majority to prove it with their votes.
