The Lagos State Government has issued a stern ultimatum to building owners, developers and facility managers across the state to register and certify all elevators or risk having them decommissioned.
The warning was issued on Friday by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, who said the government will begin aggressive enforcement against any building operating uncertified elevators after March 31, 2026.
Mojola said the directive is part of efforts by the state government to prevent avoidable accidents as Lagos continues to witness a rapid increase in high-rise developments.
According to him, elevators and other vertical transportation equipment are essential components of modern urban infrastructure and must be properly registered and regularly maintained to ensure public safety.
He warned that building owners who fail to comply with the safety requirements before the deadline risk the immediate shutdown and sealing of their premises.
Mojola explained that under the safety regulations established by the Commission, all elevators in residential, commercial and public buildings must be officially registered and certified before they are put into operation and throughout their operational lifespan.
To simplify the process and improve compliance, the state government has introduced a dedicated digital platform where owners can register their elevators and other vertical transportation equipment.
Through the platform-www.lasgsafetyreg.com, new installations in both government and privately owned buildings will be inspected before they are allowed to carry passengers, while existing elevators will undergo periodic safety audits.
The Safety Commission warned that the grace period granted to property owners is nearing its end, stressing that any elevator found to be unregistered or without a valid safety certificate after the deadline will be decommissioned during a statewide enforcement exercise.
Mojola also urged residents and office workers to support the initiative by reporting faulty elevators, poor maintenance practices or unregistered lifts through the Commission’s dedicated safety hotlines.
He said strengthening public participation and enforcement will help promote a culture of safety and accountability, adding that the government remains determined to ensure that property owners do not place cost considerations above the safety of residents in Lagos.
