Senator Gbenga Daniel’s Bill to Establish Federal College of Aviation Technology Unanimously Approved for 2nd Reading

Senator Otunba Daniel, representing the Ogun East District has presented the lead debate on the “Federal College of Aviation Technology, Ilara Remo, Ogun State (Establishment) Bill, 2023 (SB 52).” The proposed bill aims to elevate an existing Federal Technical College to a fully-fledged Federal College of Aviation Technology, providing comprehensive courses in various aviation specializations and addressing the administration of the institution.

Senator Daniel emphasized the transformative role of aviation technology, highlighting advancements in aircraft design, navigation systems, communication systems, flight management systems, engine technology, safety systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles. He underscored the need for Nigeria to address challenges in infrastructure development, safety and security measures, and research and innovation in aviation technology.

Acknowledging Nigeria’s progress in aviation, Senator Daniel proposed the establishment of the aviation technology college in Ilara-Remo. This move aligns with existing efforts in the country to develop a skilled workforce, enhance safety measures, and promote research and innovation in aviation.

The proposed college in Ilara-Remo is expected to focus on areas such as aircraft maintenance, air traffic control, and pilot training, complementing the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria. Senator Daniel highlighted the existing Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport in Ilishan-Remo and the state’s plan for an Aerotropolis, emphasizing the conducive environment for the new college.

In his final remarks, Senator Daniel urged his colleagues to support the bill. Following the lead debate, the Senate unanimously accepted the proposal. Notable Senators, including Adams Oshiomole, Aminu Tambwal, Titud Zam, OSITA Izunaso, and Fadahunsi, spoke in favor. Subsequently, the Senate President referred it to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND for further deliberation.
