Security agencies across Nigeria have mobilised a massive deployment of personnel and specialised units nationwide to ensure safety at Eid prayer grounds, recreational centres, markets, motor parks and other vulnerable public spaces, following directives ahead of the Eid‑el‑Fitr celebration later this week.
The mobilisation involves tens of thousands of officers from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), with the corps alone saying it had positioned over 53,500 personnel across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, supported by tactical and intelligence squads to address potential threats during the festive period.
In Edo State, the Commissioner of Police ordered the deployment of 5,000 officers throughout the command area, directing them to conduct intelligence‑led policing, maintain heightened visibility and use operational assets including anti‑bomb units, water cannons, gun trucks and patrol vehicles to deter and respond to security incidents.
The NSCDC Commandant‑General, while outlining the nationwide effort, emphasised that identified high‑risk locations would receive specialised coverage. He said, “Identified flashpoints such as shopping malls, Eid prayer grounds, mosques, churches, motor parks, recreation centres and other public spaces are to be closely monitored and manned by both uniformed and undercover operatives to nip any criminal activity in the bud.”
For their part, police commanders in several states have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security operatives. One state command spokesman said that routine patrols and proactive positioning of personnel at vulnerable points form a key element of the security plan, while officers have been instructed to swiftly act on intelligence reports and maintain law and order throughout the festivities.
Authorities also highlighted the need to curb common festival‑related crimes, including pickpocketing, phone snatching and traffic violations, stressing that a strong security presence is intended to deter violence and ensure a peaceful Eid celebration for all Nigerians.
