Jean‑Guy Blaise Mayolas, the president of the Congolese Football Federation, along with his wife and son, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after a court found them guilty of embezzling about $1.3 million in funds provided by FIFA for football development programs in the country.
The ruling, delivered by a court in the Republic of the Congo on Tuesday, concluded a major corruption investigation that has shaken football administration in the nation. Prosecutors accused Mayolas and his family members of diverting money meant to support grassroots football initiatives and administrative development within the federation.
Investigators said the funds were channelled through fraudulent transactions and falsified financial records, allowing the accused to conceal the diversion of the money. The court found that the scheme involved multiple financial irregularities, including money laundering, embezzlement, and document forgery, which ultimately led to the life sentences handed down to the three defendants.
Mayolas did not appear in court when the judgment was delivered and was therefore sentenced in absentia, according to reports. His son, Lionel Mayolas, and his wife were also found guilty of participating in the scheme and received the same life sentence after prosecutors linked them to the misappropriation of the football funds.
The case centered on money allocated by FIFA to develop football in the country, including support for the women’s game and administrative activities of the national federation. Investigators discovered that a large portion of the funds had been redirected through shell companies and suspicious financial transfers rather than being used for the intended projects.
Evidence presented during the trial included financial documents, banking records, and internal administrative materials from the federation. Authorities said the investigation lasted about eight months, during which prosecutors examined the financial operations of the football body to determine how the funds had been misused.
The scandal also implicated other senior officials within FECOFOOT. The federation’s general secretary Badji Mombo Wantete and treasurer Raoul Kanda were each sentenced to five years in prison for their roles in the financial misconduct uncovered during the investigation.
Mayolas, who had served as head of the Congolese Football Federation since 2018, had previously faced accusations of diverting funds intended for women’s football and other development projects. Earlier allegations suggested that only a small portion of FIFA’s financial support had reached its intended beneficiaries.
The verdict is considered one of the most significant legal actions against a football administrator in the country’s history. Observers say the ruling could intensify scrutiny over how international football development funds are managed across national federations, particularly those receiving financial support from FIFA.
