Flamingos of Nigeria have begun their 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls’ Cup title defence in emphatic fashion, defeating Niger Republic 5-0 in Yamoussoukro on Wednesday.
Captain Harmony Chidi opened the scoring in the 16th minute as Nigeria quickly established control of the contest.
Awawu Bashiru added a second before half-time, while Adegbuyi had a goal ruled out for offside as the Flamingos maintained pressure on their opponents.
Nigeria went into the interval firmly in command, with goalkeeper Onyiyechi Opara barely troubled during the opening 45 minutes.
The Flamingos continued to dominate after the restart, with their pace and attacking movement causing problems for the Nigerien defence.
Ohunene Sunday eventually extended Nigeria’s lead in the 83rd minute before Mary Dunstan made it 4-0.
Ayomide Rotimi completed the rout in the fourth minute of stoppage time to give Nigeria a 5-0 victory.
The result gives the defending champions an ideal start to their campaign, combining five goals with a clean sheet as they begin their bid to retain the WAFU-B U-17 Girls’ Cup.
