The UK government has confirmed that new passport application fees will take effect from April 10, 2025.

These changes, pending parliamentary approval, will lead to increased costs for both online and paper applications, impacting adults and children alike.

Fee Increases for Domestic and Overseas Applications

According to the UK Home Office, the revised fees will apply to applications submitted both within the UK and from overseas.

The adjustments are part of an effort to ensure that the passport system remains financially self-sustaining, thereby reducing reliance on taxpayer funding.

The Home Office emphasised that the government does not profit from these fees.

    Higher Costs for Domestic Applications

From April 10, 2025, standard online applications within the UK will see price increases:

The fee for an adult passport will rise from £88.50 to £94.50.

The fee for a child’s passport will increase from £57.50 to £61.50.

Postal applications will also become more expensive:

The adult fee will increase from £100 to £107.

The child fee will rise from £69 to £74.

    Changes to Premium Service Fees

The Premium Service, which provides passport issuance within a day, will also see price hikes

The fee for adults will rise from £207.50 to £222.

The fee for children will increase from £176.50 to £189.

This service remains an option for those in urgent need of a passport while applying from within the UK.

    Increased Costs for Overseas Applications

For individuals applying from abroad, the standard online application fees will increase as follows.

The adult fee will rise from £101 to £108.

The child fee will increase from £65.50 to £70.

    For paper applications made overseas:

The adult fee will go up from £112.50 to £120.50.

The child fee will rise from £77 to £82.50.

    Justification for the Fee Changes

The Home Office explained that these increases are necessary to sustain the passport service and ensure its continued efficiency. The fees help cover essential services, including processing applications, providing consular support to UK citizens overseas, and managing UK border operations.

“The fees contribute to the cost of processing passport applications, consular support overseas, including for lost or stolen passports, and the cost of processing British citizens at UK borders,” the Home Office stated.

In 2024, 99.7% of standard UK applications were processed within three weeks, provided no additional information was required. The government advises applicants to submit their applications well ahead of travel plans to avoid delays.

These adjustments align with guidelines set by HM Treasury, which regularly reviews passport fees to ensure they reflect operational costs and service demands.
