The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor Diewait Ikpechukwu, who died on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at the age of 71.

The actor, whose career spanned more than 25 years, was known for his roles in several Nollywood productions, particularly movies featuring traditional rulers and influential figures.

Beyond acting, Ikpechukwu had an interesting journey that took him through football, broadcasting and the corporate world before he established himself in Nollywood.

Here are important things to know about the late actor.

    1. Born August 23, 1955

Diewait Ikpechukwu was born on August 23, 1955. He hailed from southeastern Nigeria and spent several years building a career across sports, broadcasting and entertainment.

    2. Footballer Before Becoming An Actor

Before venturing into Nollywood, Ikpechukwu was a talented footballer who played as a right winger in the 1970s.

He received an invitation to the Green Eagles camp, Nigeria’s former senior national football team.

He played for teams including Blue Diamonds of Nsukka and Kaduna Rocks and captained the Kaduna Polytechnic football team.

    3. Had Interest In Sports Broadcasting

While studying in Kaduna, Ikpechukwu developed an interest in broadcasting and reportedly worked with radio stations, where he provided football commentary.

His involvement in sports and broadcasting exposed him to the world of media before he eventually ventured into acting.

    4. Studied Marketing

The late actor attended Comprehensive High School in Awo-Omamma, Imo State, before proceeding to Kaduna State Polytechnic, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in Marketing.

He also completed his National Youth Service Corps programme at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and later obtained a postgraduate diploma in Marketing from Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

    5. Worked At NITEL Before Joining Nollywood

Before becoming a full-time actor, Ikpechukwu worked with the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), where he served as a business office manager.

His transition into the entertainment industry came after his involvement in television productions at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Enugu.

    6. Made Feature Film Debut In 1998

Ikpechukwu made his feature film debut in Evil Men in 1998, where he played a traditional ruler.

The production featured established actors, including Pete Edochie, Alex Usifo and Liz Benson.

The film helped open doors for him in the Nigerian movie industry.

    7. Featured In Several Nollywood Movies

Throughout his career, which spanned more than 25 years, Ikpechukwu appeared in several Nigerian productions.

Some of the movies associated with him include Royal Palace (2005), The Guilty (2006), Across the River (2006), Python King (2007), Omera (2019), A Dance to Forget (2020), Emecheta (2021), Nwando (2021) and Ìjé Love (2022).

    8. Popular For Playing A Traditional Ruler

Ikpechukwu became familiar to Nollywood audiences for his portrayal of kings, traditional rulers, elderly statesmen and other influential characters.

His commanding screen presence made him a recognisable face in movies exploring traditional institutions and cultural themes.

    9. Served As Chairman Of AGN Enugu Chapter

Beyond acting, Ikpechukwu was actively involved in the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), where he served as the pioneer chairman of its Enugu State chapter.

He also supported the development of upcoming actors, advising them against desperation in their pursuit of fame and encouraging them to take their craft seriously.

The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, announced Ikpechukwu’s death in an Instagram tribute on Friday, November 6, 2026.

He described the late actor as another legend who had bowed out, adding that his memories would remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

Reports indicate that Ikpechukwu died following a prolonged illness, although the specific nature of the illness has not been disclosed.

He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family.
