ECOWAS: Lagos to shut major Victoria Island roads
The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion plan ahead of the high-level Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Summit scheduled to take place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi on Monday, the government said the traffic advisory was designed to ensure free vehicular movement and strengthen security arrangements during the regional event, which is expected to draw several heads of state, diplomats, and key stakeholders from across West Africa.
Motorists navigating the Victoria Island axis, particularly those commuting through Ahmadu Bello Way, Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, and surrounding inner roads, are advised to follow the designated alternative routes to avoid delays.
The advisory also affects traffic from Kofo Abayomi Road, Bonny Camp, and the Independence/McEwen Bridge corridor, with diversions directed through adjacent streets leading to key destinations like Lekki, Lagos Island, and the Mainland.
According to Osiyemi, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other traffic enforcement personnel would be strategically deployed across the affected areas to guide motorists, reduce inconvenience, and maintain order throughout the summit period.
He urged road users to cooperate with traffic officials and remain patient as the state plays host to a major regional event aimed at fostering economic and diplomatic cooperation in West Africa.
The ECOWAS summit, which marks the 50th anniversary of the regional bloc, will feature several commemorative activities including a keynote address by President Bola Tinubu, who is the current Chairman of ECOWAS.
