Governor Uba Sani opens bank accounts for 2m poor citizens
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has announced the opening of two million bank accounts for poor and underserved individuals in the state, emphasising his administration’s commitment to a “pro-poor, people-centred” governance approach.
The governor made this statement on Thursday at the distribution of food items and palliatives for Christmas and New Year, an event organised at the Umaru Yar’adua Conference Centre, Kaduna, and spearheaded by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
“Through our financial inclusion programme, we have opened over two million bank accounts for poor, vulnerable, and underserved persons to enable them to benefit from state and Federal Government social intervention programmes,” the governor stated.
Sani also highlighted previous initiatives by his administration, including the distribution of palliatives, agricultural inputs, grants, and soft loans to farmers and small-scale enterprises.
He lauded the First Lady, describing her as “the mother of the nation who is caring and compassionate.” He credited her with initiating impactful social programs, both during her tenure as First Lady of Lagos State and as a senator in the 9th National Assembly.
“Her Excellency was my colleague in the 9th Senate. Like the mother she truly is, she took good care of us, her colleagues, and always provided welfare packages during festive periods. Her generosity knows no bounds,” he said.
Sani also urged residents of Kaduna State to use the festive season to build on the state’s prevailing peaceful atmosphere, citing the Kaduna Peace Model as a reference point for conflict resolution.
“Our state has bounced back to reckoning. Many conflict-impacted states are interested in replicating our model,” he added.
He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “listening President” committed to alleviating Nigerians’ struggles through various social intervention programmes.
