Lagos Sets Date For Africa’s First E1 Electric Powerboat Championship
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the state will host Africa’s first-ever E1 Championship on October 4 and 5, 2025.
The governor made this known in a statement via his official X account on Sunday.
“This weekend, we were in Monaco experiencing the E1 Racing Championship. It was a good reminder of how innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create something truly groundbreaking”, Sanwo-Olu said.
The E1 Championship is the world’s first all-electric powerboat series, aimed at promoting clean energy and marine sustainability.
“I’m proud to share that Lagos will become the first African city to host the E1 Championship on October 4th and 5th, 2025. That’s a major milestone for the sport and for what it says about our city,” he stated.
According to the governor, Lagos hosting of the global event affirms the state’s readiness to join international conversations on sustainable energy and innovation in marine transport.
“It shows that Lagos is ready to be part of the global conversation on clean energy, sustainability, and new approaches to marine transportation,” the governor stated.
Beyond the sporting significance, Sanwo-Olu emphasised the cultural and economic importance of the championship.
“This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special, our culture, our energy, and our people. It’s a chance to welcome visitors, share our stories, and highlight the incredible potential of our city,” he said.
The governor also appreciated Afreximbank for its partnership and support, particularly for its investment in Team Drogba, a participant in the E1 series led by football legend Didier Drogba.
“I’m grateful to Afreximbank for their support, not just as a partner but as a believer in what Lagos can achieve. Their investment in Team Drogba and their commitment to this vision mean a great deal,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu concluded with optimism, describing the championship as a landmark moment for Lagos and a gateway to greater global recognition.
“We’re bringing a world-class sporting event to our shores, we’re opening a new chapter for Lagos, and I can’t wait for the world to see what we have to offer,” he concluded.
