Tech-driven policing only way to tackle insecurity- Arase

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Solomon Arase, says he dreams of a Nigerian Police that is technology-driven and knowledge-based.

This, Arase said, was the only way to confront the challenges in the country.

Arase who is a former Inspector General of Police, stated this when he received a delegation from the University of Jos led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Tanko Ishaya, in his office in Abuja on Tuesday.

In a statement by the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, he stressed that a tech-driven Police Force has been his priority since he assumed office as the chairman of the commission.

The chairman also noted that policing had become scientific and technology-driven, and promised to partner with the University of Jos to develop police officers for the challenging task of modern policing.

“Police is no more manual or analogue, it has become knowledge-based and technology-driven and this is the only way we can confront the security challenges facing our nation. We can only reclaim and occupy the ungoverned spaces when we embrace this modern policing.

“He assured the visitors that the Commission will partner and collaborate with the University to build a new crop of officers and Men that will change the face of officers and Men that will change the face of Policing in Nigeria for the better.

“He said efforts are in place to improve the training manuals in our colleges to be in tandem with other training colleges in other advanced nations”, the statement also read.

In his remarks, Ishaya, who led the UNIJOS delegation, explained that the purpose of the visit was to seek partnership and collaboration between the PSC and the university in areas of training, research and knowledge acquisition.

He said the institution could assist in the training of Nigerian Police officers in cyber security, intelligence gathering, psychology, law and other fields that would help improve their policing duties.

“We have experts, we have the manpower, we also have a Directorate of Internal Security and we can put together a training manual/programmes for the Police”, he said.

Among the the Vice Chancellor’s delegation were, Prof Joash Ojo Amupitan, Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration; Dr. Rejoice Songden, Registrar; and Mr. Philip Fada Umbugala, Bursar.

Others were Mr. Nansak Nimchak, Yakubu Gomos, Dr. Lami Temine, Mrs. Shitnaan Hoomkwap and Nasuk Maigida.
