Tourism: Lagos got $71.6m during Christmas period

Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Idris Aregbe

Tourism: Lagos got $71.6m during Christmas period.

The Lagos State Government has announced that it generated over $71.6 million in revenue from tourism, hospitality, and entertainment during the 2024 ‘Detty December’ celebrations.

According to the government, hotels contributed over $44 million, while short-let apartments added $13 million to the total revenue.

The Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Idris Aregbe, shared these figures during a weekend review of the Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025 Report with stakeholders.

“Tourism remains a vital driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State, with the ‘Ember’ season playing a key role,” Aregbe stated.

Aregbe commended the report, recently released by MO Africa Consulting, highlighting the impressive revenue generated during December.

During ‘Detty December,’ Lagos hosted a variety of events that attracted massive crowds and showcased Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. Key events included the Mrs Universe Africa event, Greater Lagos Fiesta, music concerts, fashion shows, cultural exhibitions, culinary events, Spotify Wrapped Concert, Lungu Boy Block Party, Rhythm Unplugged, Entertainment Week Lagos, Joeboy, The La Vida Experience, African Fashion Week, and Fashion Souk.

The season also attracted locals, members of the Nigerian diaspora (commonly known as IJGBs—I Just Got Back), and international tourists eager to experience the vibrancy and diversity that make Lagos a global cultural destination.

Reflecting on the success of the festivities, Aregbe said the Sanwo-Olu administration is shaping a Lagos that blends tradition with creativity, creating unforgettable experiences for all.

He explained that the various activities held during ‘Detty December’ not only enriched the state’s cultural landscape but also had a significant economic impact.

Aregbe praised Governor Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat for their dedication to developing Lagos as a cultural and tourism hub.

“Tourism remains a vital driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State, with the ‘Ember’ season playing a key role. This period represents unity, vibrancy, and celebration, fuelled by the dynamic spirit of Lagosians,” he said.

“From enterprising artisans in local markets to creative entrepreneurs in the entertainment and tourism sectors, the resilience and ingenuity of Lagosians lie at the heart of its success. The participation of residents, visitors from other states, and international tourists has been fundamental in establishing Lagos as a cultural and tourism hub.”

Aregbe noted that insights from this season would be studied and applied to the 2025 Lagos Tourism is Rising campaign, aimed at building on the successes achieved so far.

“As Lagos looks ahead to 2025 with the Lagos Tourism is Rising campaign, the goal remains clear: to build on this momentum, celebrate our cultural richness, and solidify Lagos as a beacon of tourism, culture, and economic excellence,” he added.

He also expressed gratitude to the hospitable Lagosians, industry stakeholders, performers, and artisans, whose creativity and participation were crucial to the success of ‘Detty December.’ He further commended the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture for playing a pivotal role in ensuring the season’s success and reinforcing Lagos as Africa’s tourism and entertainment capital.
