The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has officially dissociated itself from a planned demonstration at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja today, Tuesday, January 20, 2026. In a sternly worded statement released by the National Working Committee (NWC), the party labeled the organizers of the protest as “impostors” and “political merchants” who are no longer recognized members of the organization.
The controversy stems from a call by a splinter group for a mass march against INEC’s current leadership over the alleged refusal to update the party’s national officer database. However, the mainstream leadership of the NNPP clarified that those spearheading the agitation were expelled following a series of court judgments, including a decisive ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja. “We wish to state clearly that the NNPP is not part of any planned protest against INEC. These individuals are acting on their own and do not represent the interests or the mandate of our great party,” the statement read.
The party’s leadership urged security agencies to take necessary action against anyone found using the NNPP’s name or insignia to incite public disorder. They emphasized that the party remains committed to the rule of law and is currently focused on internal consolidation ahead of the 2027 general elections and upcoming off-cycle polls. “Our members and supporters nationwide are advised to ignore this call to protest and remain calm. The leadership of the party is in firm control and will not be distracted by the antics of disgruntled former members,” the NWC added.
This move comes as the NNPP continues to navigate a complex legal battle over its chairmanship and board composition. By distancing itself from the Abuja protests, the party appears to be signaling a desire for stability and a cooperative relationship with electoral regulators. As of this morning, security around the INEC headquarters in Maitama has been beefed up, though the anticipated large-scale demonstration has failed to materialize following the party’s public dissociation.
