Juventus have shifted their focus to the Champions League knockout play-offs with a distinct air of caution as they prepare to face Turkish champions Galatasaray and their star striker, Victor Osimhen. The tie, confirmed following the draw in Nyon, sets up a high-stakes reunion for Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti, who managed Osimhen during their historic 2022-23 Scudetto-winning campaign at Napoli. Club director Giorgio Chiellini and Spalletti have both publicly acknowledged that while Galatasaray possesses a deep roster, the Nigerian international remains the primary threat to the Italian side’s European ambitions.
Chiellini, speaking to Sky Sports, emphasized that Juventus must maintain total concentration over both legs, particularly given the volatile atmosphere expected during the first leg in Istanbul. “It’s a strong team with great individuals, really good players,” Chiellini noted. “We’ll play the second leg at home, so it doesn’t end in Istanbul. But we have to go to that stadium and play our game, expose their weaknesses, which they do have, but also limit the big potential and individual quality they have not just upfront. We all know Victor Osimhen well, but there are other important players too.”
The former Juventus captain, widely regarded as one of the premier defenders of his era, offered a candid assessment when asked if he would have enjoyed the challenge of marking Osimhen in his prime. “At one time, I would have liked to mark him, yes, but today I wouldn’t last two minutes,” Chiellini admitted. “I’ve been lucky to play against him a couple of times in my career, but it was too late for me, so let’s say my physical stats were limited against someone like Osimhen. But Galatasaray is not only him; there are many important players. The Turkish league is investing heavily, and they’re bringing in several high-level profiles. It will be a fascinating double challenge.” When questioned on whether Juventus had ever attempted to sign the striker, Chiellini clarified that while “a player of that calibre might be of interest,” there was never a realistic transfer pursuit.
Spalletti remains equally impressed by the physical attributes of his former pupil, warning that Osimhen’s explosive pace allows him to dismantle defensive lines single-handedly. “When he’s bursting forward, he can run 100 meters in 11 seconds,” the Juventus manager recalled. Osimhen enters the play-off in peak form, having recorded seven goals in 13 Turkish Super Lig appearances alongside six goals in six Champions League matches this season. His contributions have helped Galatasaray maintain a six-point lead at the top of their domestic table and secure notable European victories over Liverpool, Ajax, and Bodo/Glimt. Juventus will now look to leverage the second leg in Turin to navigate a path to the last 16 against a side that has become increasingly formidable on the continental stage.
