The Federal Government has officially launched a landmark initiative to modernize law enforcement across Nigeria by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to equip police stations with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and high-speed fiber optic connectivity. This agreement was signed on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, between the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (PTF), aiming to convert police stations in all 774 local government areas into advanced technology hubs to enhance national security.
At the heart of this transformation is Project BRIDGE (Building Resilient Digital Infrastructure for Growth), which focuses on connecting over 7,000 police stations to Nigeria’s national fiber optic backbone. Minister of Communications, Dr. Bosun Tijani, explained that the first phase involves a nationwide geospatial mapping exercise to identify the proximity of each station to existing fiber “Points of Presence” (POP). By bridging the “last-mile” connectivity gap, the government ensures that even stations in remote wards have the digital infrastructure required for modern policing.
The integration of AI is expected to revolutionize daily operations within the Nigeria Police Force through predictive analytics, which utilizes data to identify crime hotbeds and allocate resources proactively. Other key features include AI-powered speech-to-text systems to transcribe citizen statements in real-time and a secure framework for managing digital evidence across various law enforcement units. These tools are designed to streamline reporting and drastically improve emergency response times.
Project BRIDGE is backed by a robust financial structure involving international partners, including the World Bank, the European Union, and the African Development Bank (AfDB), which recently approved $200 million for the project. The initiative is structured as a public-private partnership to ensure long-term sustainability. Executive Secretary of the Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, emphasized that this partnership is a critical step toward achieving a “Smart Police Station” vision, which includes comprehensive digital literacy training for police personnel. Minister Tijani concluded that a connected police force is a more effective one, noting that this digital upgrade is a core component of the national agenda to secure the lives and property of all Nigerians.
