Lagos introduces NIN to get FG’s cash relief for vulnerable
To deal with rising economic hardship, the Lagos State Government has unveiled the integration of National Identification Numbers (NIN) into its Single Social Register to facilitate the Federal Government’s planned cash transfers to vulnerable households.
The Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George, disclosed this during a press briefing at the state secretariat in Alausa.
He said the exercise aligns with directives from the Presidential Panel, which mandated states to update social registers with NIN and geolocation data ahead of the disbursement of a N75,000 relief grant to vulnerable citizens.
According to George, Lagos has already linked the NINs of 130,000 heads of households—part of the 688,759 listed in the state’s register—within just one month of commencing the exercise.
“The integration, which began on April 9, 2025, is being implemented across all 57 LGAs and LCDAs. Our teams are working closely with local government officials and community leaders to ensure the process is thorough and inclusive,” he said.
Data from the Ministry shows that Ikorodu leads the NIN linkage figures with 16,418 households, followed by Alimosho with 14,964 and Mushin with 10,712.
George noted that the Lagos State Single Social Register currently comprises 688,759 household heads and over 2.6 million individual members. The data helps the government accurately target social welfare interventions.
“This is not just a data update—it’s a bold move to ensure that every vulnerable Lagos resident is captured and included in ongoing and future social protection programmes,” he added.
He called on residents to cooperate with field agents by providing their NINs promptly, stressing the urgency and importance of the initiative.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Olayinka Ojo, said the integration would boost the credibility of the register by eliminating duplicate entries and ensuring that benefits reach only the truly eligible.
