The Federal Government has intensified efforts to review Nigeria’s National Diaspora Policy as part of broader measures aimed at improving the protection, engagement and welfare of Nigerians living abroad amid growing global uncertainties and diplomatic tensions.
Government officials said the review process is designed to address emerging challenges affecting Nigerians in different parts of the world, including immigration restrictions, economic instability, discrimination, conflicts and evolving international labour conditions.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), alongside relevant ministries, agencies and development partners, is currently engaging stakeholders across various sectors to update the policy framework in line with present global realities.
Speaking during a stakeholder consultation session, officials stressed that Nigerians abroad remain a critical part of national development through remittances, investments, skills transfer and international representation. They noted that the government is seeking more effective ways to strengthen communication channels with diaspora communities while ensuring their rights and interests are adequately protected.
The policy review is also expected to address issues surrounding emergency response mechanisms for Nigerians caught in crises overseas, legal support systems, diaspora voting conversations, youth engagement, and stronger collaboration between Nigerian missions abroad and diaspora organisations.
Stakeholders participating in the consultations include representatives of diaspora groups, civil society organisations, migration experts, foreign affairs officials, academics and private sector players.
According to officials, the updated policy will place greater emphasis on digital engagement, data management, investment opportunities, and improved consular services for Nigerians living overseas.
The Federal Government maintained that the review reflects its commitment to building a stronger relationship with citizens abroad while positioning the diaspora community as a strategic partner in national growth and development.
